Hitting the roads this summer: Keeping safe the smart way

Hitting the road this summer for another great adventure? Summer is here and so are the summer holidays! Keep safe out there with some of our do’s and don’ts of summer road trip driving.

Summer road trip do’s

Give your car a once over before you leave

Before you drive out of the garage, give your car a once over about a week leading up to your trip. Look under the hood, add water, check oil, check fluids, make sure your lights are all working, no cracks in the windows, no lights flashing up on the dash, AC is working, jumper cables are present, and you have a spare tyre in the boot. It does pay to have a mechanic give your car a once over before you go away as you wouldn’t want to be stuck remotely with a problem that could have been fixed before you left home.

Don’t forget the snacks!

What’s a road trip without snacks? Try and keep them healthy by choosing fruits and wholefoods, however we all know that not all snacks will be perfectly healthy - and that’s a part of the road trip life! You’ll be sitting for long periods of time so stock up beforehand if you don’t want to blow your budget on service station prices.

Stay hydrated

Don’t forget about taking lots of water with you. Most importantly have spare water on hand in the boot of the car in case, you never know if you’ll get stuck or break down and will need extra supplies.

Make the most of stops

If you’re travelling over a longer distance, ensure you don’t miss any opportunities to stop at the service stations. You’ll need to grab some extra water, any snacks, and have a toilet break whilst you can.

Have fun!

Road trips are all about fun times! Think car games, eye-spy, a great play list and a good banter. It will make your trip all the better. Pre-load your phone or mobile devices with some entertainment options such as songs, games or movies if you need to.

Summer road trip don’ts

Don’t freestyle it

Even if it’s just a loose plan, getting from A to B, it’s important to have one so you can plan for anything that could happen during your trip and how you’ll get there. This will help you anticipate any trouble spots along the route, and plan for pit stops you’ll need to make. Plan as a safety measure, and it’ll be hard to go wrong.

Don’t go without insurance

Never leave home without Car Insurance in place. If something goes wrong, it’s your insurance that will help to cover the costs of repairs and damages. Consider roadside assistance too, as you don’t want to get caught out without any help should you get stuck.
