CGU InSTRIVE
Keep up to date with broker insights for the quarter
November 2021
Check out news and views in this quarter's CGU InSTRIVE
1. A message from Damien Gallagher
A lot has changed since my last update in August, especially as NSW and Victoria have now emerged from lockdown. It’s been wonderful to get out of the house and see people again in person, and I’m really pleased that our staff in NSW are now able to start returning to our worksites, with Victorian worksites reopening again very soon. No doubt you’ll be hearing from our teams regarding broker visitations and events for the remainder of 2021 and into next year.
For States other than NSW and Victoria it has been business as usual, with QLD having the opportunity to host two major industry events in recent weeks. After a few initial delays, the North Queensland Insurance Trade Show and Charity Benefit in Townsville and CQIB Convention on the Gold Coast went ahead, collectively raising over $100k for major charity partners Food Relief QLD and The Wesley Mission. Team CGU were once again proud to be sponsors and involved in such an important initiative.
In October we officially welcomed Jarrod Hill to CGU as our new Group Executive. With over 30 years’ industry experience, Jarrod’s appointment is an important milestone in our aspiration to lead the intermediated market to keep Australians and their businesses safe, and we’re excited to be working with him to deliver on that.
Our second Broker Pulse survey hit your inboxes on 3rd November. If you haven’t yet completed it, don’t miss your opportunity to Tell us what you really think! Be sure to check out our PulseCheck article for full details.
Finally, as we see out the remainder of 2021, it’s also a time when many Australians look towards some well-earned downtime. I hope the remainder of the year is good for all and brings with it a sense of calm and normality where it’s needed.
Best Regards,
Damien Gallagher.

3. Pulse Check
Did you tell us what you really think??
Recently you would have received - and hopefully responded to - our Broker Pulse survey. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 6 months since we sent our last (and first!) survey. Enhancing your experience across underwriting, claims, service and relationships is of utmost importance to us. We believe it’s an essential part of building and nurturing a strong partnership, and your feedback is key in terms of what we can do differently to enable us to grow together.
What changes have been made as a result of your feedback from our first survey I hear you ask?
There were some very clear messages - some of which we’re working on and some that we can implement more easily.
Firstly, we’ve improved our ARN process on CGU Connect 15T products to be more streamlined, by replacing manual ARN’s with an electronic referral and response.
We’ve also aligned our business around emerging broker needs by implementing a new operating model to better support you. This further reinforces our commitment to being a sustainable, long-term partner of choice.
We will keep you informed of further enhancements being made as we continue to receive and analyse your feedback.
4. National Ag Day
National Ag Day is fast approaching, with many events planned to celebrate Farmers and the important role they play in the Australian economy.
This year’s theme is to keep it local, while celebrating the diverse career opportunities available in the Agricultural industry, encouraging Aussies to connect over a long lunch or picnic on Friday 19 November.
CGU protect a significant portion of Australia’s Agricultural industries via our valued Broker partners. We currently insure approx. 80,000 Agri risks and underwrite over $240M GWP in SME Rural lines Australia-wide, all of which supported by a team of specialist underwriters in our dedicated Rural Insurance Centre. We’re also focussing strongly on innovation in the Agri sector, looking for ways to better help our rural clients manage their risks as farming operations evolve.

5. Fast 5 with Dustin Bartley
In this instalment of Fast 5, we introduce you to Dustin Bartley, Executive Manager of our Intermediated Personal Lines business.
-
1. Tell us a little bit about your yourself and your role.
I live in St Peters, Sydney with my wife, Nora and two daughters, Riley (5) and Zara (3). I get excited about anything to do with my family, my mates, being active and eating out. I’ve always enjoyed learning and getting out of my comfort zone which has made for a fun ride at IAG over the past 9 years. In April, I started as EM, Personal Lines which distributes motor, home, and landlord insurance via 650+ brokers, to >270,000 policyholders, and generates approximately $500m GWP.
-
2. What do you find most rewarding about working at CGU / IAG?
All the opportunities we have to learn, meet new people, and better ourselves while protecting the things that matter most to our customers.
-
3. Who or what has been the greatest influence on your career?
My parents. They were always big on work ethic, learning and teamwork. They had a view that good things are hard-earned and more enjoyable as a team – for work, sport, family life and so on.
-
4. Name 3 things you enjoy doing outside of work.
My idea of a perfect day is an early morning swim, brekky out with the family, and friends around for an afternoon BBQ.
-
5. What’s your latest Netflix or Stan binge?
Mr Inbetween – if you haven’t seen it, give it a go. The main character is an assassin who does horrible things and is somehow likeable – calm and considered, principled, and funny.
