Check that the walls, eaves and roof of your home or business are secure
Fit shutters or metal screens to all glass areas
Trim overhanging tree branches
Move all loose material to a secure area
Understand the geography of your area, taking into consideration flood risks, the highest (and closest) safe zone and evacuation areas (as designated by authorities)
At the start of the cyclone season, prepare a folder with all relevant emergency documents and emergency numbers that will be safe, secure and accessible at a moment’s notice
Tune into your local radio station to monitor the severity of the cyclone
Have a battery radio nearby in case of power outage
Have an evacuation route and emergency kit planned
Protect yourself with mattresses, rugs or blankets under a table or bench if the building begins to break under the strength of the cyclone
Do not leave safety until you are sure the danger has passed
